A 643 New Construction of the Schierstein Bridge

Material: approx. 500 tons of steel pipes

Special features: hot-rolled tubes in accordance with EN 10210, manufactured to Deutsche Bahn specifications (DBS 918002) for both directions of travel
During the construction of the new Schiersteiner Bridge, approximately 500 tons of steel tubes were used for the two lanes. Hot-rolled hollow sections conforming to EN 10210 were used, manufactured in accordance with the requirements of Deutsche Bahn Guideline DBS 918002.
Since the groundbreaking ceremony in 2013, the bridge has been a regular feature in media coverage. Particular attention has been focused on unusual construction phases, such as the movement of superstructures toward the Rhine, the floating-in of bridge segments, and the gradual opening of individual sections.
A highlight of the event was the tour of the bridge’s interior for members of the press. Access was via Rheingaustraße on the Wiesbaden side. Accompanied by experts from Hessen Mobil, the group crossed the Rhine through the bridge’s box girder. In addition to its structural function, this cavity houses utility lines and is normally accessible only for inspection and maintenance work.
The participants were impressed by the scale and technical design of the approximately 1,280-meter-long structure, whose internal geometry changes continuously along its length.
As construction progressed, work on the fabrication and installation of the steel components and the foundation work for the second half of the new bridge continued in parallel with the demolition of the old bridge, which was completed in November 2018.
